CHAMPIONS Doune Castle ended their Championship winning season unbeaten after this hard-earned away draw against Dumbarton Academy FP.

This was no meaningless end-of-season affair.

From the outset, Doune were clearly intent on creating their own piece of history by going through the full league programme without defeat. Dumbarton were pursuing second place and clearly intent on denting the Castle’s ambitions.

Dumbarton enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges and came close on several occasions.

Doune finally settled into the game started to enjoy greater possession. On 18 minutes, Sean Heaver smacked a fierce dipping free kick up and over the wall. The Accies keeper reacted to collect high to his right.

After 28 minutes, Dumbarton broke quickly down the Castle right. Doune were relieved the striker miscued his effort and the ball flashed back across goal and wide of the right hand post.

On 35 minutes, Colin Burke won a clear foul on the edge of the box. Sean Heaver whipped a fierce dipping shot up and over the wall. The Accies keeper was well positioned and held high.

With three minutes of the half remaining, Sean Heaver came close for Doune.

The winger sprinted clear before lashing another dipping volley that flashed beyond the keeper’s reach but slipped inches wide of the right hand post.

An entertaining and fiercely competitive half ended all square at 0-0.

Dumbarton had an early chance at the start of the second half. To Doune’s relief, the ball inched narrowly past the post.

After 58 minutes, Niall McClure brushed aside a challenge before smacking a powerful drive across the surface. The Accies keeper failed to gather first time but pounced on the loose ball to avert danger.

On 59 minutes, Colin Burke passed a good opportunity to break the deadlock. He fired straight at the keeper who blocked with his legs.

On 67 minutes, Burke pounced on the loose ball. He swivelled and directed a low shot towards goal from 20 yards. The Accies keeper again saved at the second attempt.

After 83 minutes, Sean Heaver jinked inside and lashed a dipping angled volley from 16 yards that flew a foot wide of the right hand post.

Two minutes into added time, Sean Heaver whipped in a swerving free kick from 24 yards. The ball seemed destined for the far corner until it took a cruel deflection off Chris Ogilvie and swept to safety.

That was the final move of a highly entertaining game and the most open of games surprisingly ended goalless.
