PRODIGIOUS golfers from Stirling University will play their home games in the Wee County, having finalised an agreement for the coming season.

Alloa Golf Club (AGC) will host matches from four of the five university teams right through until spring 2019.

The link-up has been hailed as a major coup by officials, with the standard of talent on display likely to draw a lot of interested spectators.

Alan Goodwillie, Greens Convenor at AGC, said: "The university has five golfing teams and teams 2, 3, 4 and 5 will be playing all their home matches against other Scottish Universities at AGC.

"Team 1 is now the top university golf team in Europe and second in the world [behind] Harvard University in the USA.

"We at Alloa Golf Club are very pleased we have managed to secure an agreement with Stirling University Golfing Society for them to play teams from St Andrews, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Abertay, Aberdeen, Strathclyde and Glasgow Caledonian."

Sean Davidson, Stirling Uni team captain, hailed the blossoming partnership between the uni and the club and hopes to see a lot of club members showing their support.

He said: "I personally played the course back in May of this year with Alan Goodwillie and Bob Kemp (committee members at Alloa) and I was impressed with a number of aspects of the course and club in general.

"The enthusiasm to be a part of what we, as a club, are trying to achieve at Stirling was one key factor as well as some excellent facilities such as the clubhouse and practice areas.

"The course itself is impressive both in layout and in condition, especially with the time of year our season runs. We have built a very strong relationship already which is great and exactly what we wanted when we set out to find a new home."

Sean added: "The move offers the golfers at the university a great setting to learn and develop as players which in turn will enhance the student experience that we are currently trying to offer to all members.

"I'm excited about the future of golf at Stirling University and with this partnership we hope to build new up and coming golfers and really provide an excellent platform for our members to showcase their skills.

"I'd really urge the local community to go along and support Alloa GC, even if it's not for a game. The catering offered by Katie in the kitchen is excellent value and I hope that we can further increase the number of members who come along on a Sunday to watch us play, as it really provides a lift to the players."
