BT Caledonia League Division 3 Midlands

Crieff & Strathearn 1st XV ......... 41

Fife Southern ............................... 5

Fife Southern visited the Braidhaugh on league business last Saturday with the home team looking to continue their good form this season. Coach Cameron Kennedy had a full squad to pick from and having already beaten the team from Rosyth in the away fixture, hopes were high for a repeat. However the coaching staff stressed that the team would have to work hard to ensure the win.

With all the recent rain the pitch, though playable, was very heavy and wet. Greg Coul got the Blue and Golds off the mark with a opportunist effort. Kicking the ball on from a ruck he ran on to score the first try of the day. That was quickly followed by an excellent run from prop Paddy Leonard who shipped the ball to Ryan Flett, who touched down and duly converted his try. The visitors were putting up a defiant defence and indeed won more than their fair share of scrums but the quick movement of the Crieff and Strathearn backs were too much for them. Ryan Flett again scoring from an interception by Marcus Fenton to give the Blue and Golds a 27-0 half time lead.

Fife Southern started the second half in determined fashion and were rewarded for their efforts with a good try in the corner.

This was followed by the flash point of the game , which was up to this point, a friendly competition. With a Fife Southern player lying in an offside position at the back of a maul, scrum half, Richard Leckie tried in Southern Hemisphere fashion, to get him out of the way. The offending player took exception to his efforts and faced off to the Blue and Gold scrum half. After the cafuffle calmed down the referee decided to red card both players.

Normal service was resumed after this fracas and Greg Coul scored again but the best was saved to last and some great handling from Ryan Flett to Rory Hart, who offloaded to Robbie Robertson to score and seal the 41-5 victory.

There will be no game this Saturday due to Six Nations fixtures.

The next game is away from home to Grangemouth 2xv.

The home team are still in second place in the league to Falkirk 2xv, but are battling hard to overtake them.
