Crieff and Strathearn 1st XV made another short trip to Stirlingshire on Saturday for a bowl game against Stirling University.

The winning side would advance to the quarter final of the Caledonia Regional Bowl. Coach Alan Webster was keen to stress that this was a no pressure contest where the players could go out and express themselves.

It has become a recurring theme for the Crieff side this season as the game was a tightly contested one, which either side could have won.

The first Crieff try was scored by Ryan Flett; some calm and consistent phase play marched the team up the pitch. The ball was passed out wide to Flett who touched down in the corner. Conversion missed.

Stirling University were utilising their powerful midfield to get across the gain line and scored two well worked tries. Gavin Tainsh scored two penalties to reduce the deficit.

A poor clearance kick gifted Stirling with their third try as a missed tackle allowed their winger to score an easy try.

Crieff scored a second try which would turn out to be a consolation try. It came from another trademark Andrew Tainsh break, beating several defenders to score under the posts. Conversion missed.

In an exciting game, the players can be very proud of their performance against a powerful and fit university side, but ultimately, they lost the match 23-16.

On Sunday, the Under 18s travelled through to Montrose for a league game. Well done to players who made the effort to travel through.

Unfortunately they were unable to win the game, but the Crieff side did play some good phases of rugby. However, there were too many handling errors and missed tackles; areas to work on at training.

The final score was 76-17 to Montrose & District, but it was not a reflection of the game and Crieff can be proud that they didn’t give up at any stage during the game.
