THE chair of the Dollar Community Council has expressed his concern at the lack of traffic mediation schemes in the village.

Derek McDonald has spoken out about the need for better traffic control in Dollar after a road collision in February left a car overturned.

Dollar currently has a 20 mile per hour speed limit; however, Police Scotland do not monitor 20mph areas, instead leaving it up to local authorities.

Derek said: "In Dollar, we suffer from speeding despite having a 20 mile per hour speed limit and this is due to the lack of policing in these areas.

"Police feel that it is down to the councils to control the traffic and because of this, the traffic is uncontrolled.

"We've taken it up with the council and we continue to talk to our community liaison police officers about it."

Derek's concerns are echoed by Callum Jackson, the former chair of the community council who stepped down in September.

He said attempts to work alongside Clackmannanshire Council have so far proven fruitless and spoke of the dangers of carrying on without a mediation scheme.

"The community council has been on at Clacks Council but our complaints have fallen on deaf ears a bit," he explained.

"Tillicoultry and Alva have put lots of pedestrian crossings in the towns which slows the traffic right down, but they haven't done the same in Dollar.

"As a result, what happens is we have people zooming into Dollar from the Muckhart end which is just unsafe."

The community council's fears were heightened in the wake of a traffic accident that took place in February 2023, when two vehicles collided on Muckhart Road, resulting in one car overturning and landing on its side.

Speeding is not believed to have been a contributing cause in this instance, but it bolstered calls for authorities to monitor the area.

When asked about traffic control in Dollar, a Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Road safety and road crime are serious concerns are key priorities for Police Scotland as a whole, as well as for the community policing team in Clackmannanshire.

"This work includes recent on the A91 through the Hillfoots villages and into the Dollar area."

Clackmannanshire Council has highlighted traffic improvement works expected to be implemented as part of the new housing scheme in Dollar.

The council has informed that the public will be given an opportunity to share their views during the consultation process.

A refresh of current key road markings is also planned alongside a new one planned for the west side of Dollar later on in the year.
