THE century should have been brought up long before now for Alfredo Morelos. If it arrives tonight, it would be timely in more ways than one.

A place in the Rangers history books awaits the Colombian when he scores his next goal for Rangers but it is the future that Steven Gerrard is more concerned with ahead of the Europa League fixture against Brondby.

Gerrard knows his side should have won more games and collected more points so far this term, but a profligacy in the final third has undermined their efforts at home and abroad during what has been a lacklustre start to the season overall.

Morelos is not wholly to blame for that, of course. As Gerrard's main source of firepower, he does need to take his share of the responsibility, though, and the handful of chances spurned against Hearts on Saturday proved costly for Rangers.

In Kemar Roofe, who has scored seven times this term, and Fashion Sakala, the summer signing that has just one strike to his credit thus far, Gerrard has alternative options to Morelos through the middle.

He needs the 25-year-old to rise to the European occasion once again, however, and a sixth goal of the campaign would be important for many different reasons if Morelos can find the net at Ibrox.

"Five in 15 is not enough for me," Gerrard said of Morelos' strike rate to date. "Not just from him, I think we need to score more goals. All our strikers.

"We are at Rangers here, the chances that we are creating I would expect the guy who has played the majority of the minutes as a number nine to have more than five in 15.

"They are stats that we need to improve on moving forward. We have to keep providing the service and the chances for Alfredo to get more goals.

"But if you look at previous number nines and also Alfredo’s record in other seasons, it has been better than five in 15.

"I am sure Alfredo himself, and certainly myself and the coaching staff and our attacking unit in terms of our number nines, we want to get more goals.

"If I have got any advice to him it would be for him to focus on keep getting in the right places and right areas and he will absolutely smash 100 goals in no time.

"He shouldn’t really overthink it, all he should think is ‘what can I do and what can I offer the team to be the best version of myself in terms of us getting the results?’

"We are a team that do create a lot of chances so it is only a matter of time before that record comes and he is going to go on and score many more goals. So he shouldn’t overthink it."

The frustration was etched on Gerrard's face at the weekend as he saw the champions spurn a succession of chances and ultimately throw away two points as Hearts snatched a draw at Ibrox.

The same fate befell Rangers at home to Motherwell last month and Gerrard's side have been unconvincing in front of goal for large swathes of the season.

Successive defeats to Lyon and Sparta Prague have left them no room for error in Group A and another misfiring evening could spell a premature end for their European ambitions.

"All my strikers are available for selection," Gerrard said. "I think we should be scoring more goals.

"I think we should be rewarding ourselves for a lot of our good play.

"We are getting into the right areas, we are creating chances in games.

"I would be a lot more frustrated and disappointed if we weren’t creating these chances and weren’t getting in the right areas.

"I do believe someone along the line will be on the end of some goals from us.

"I was asked a question about Alfredo at the weekend and it’s quite obvious he is not at his best.

"But he is still getting into the right places, his all-round game is still okay. It’s only a matter of time before the goals come.

"From Alfredo’s point of view he is sitting on 99 so I’m sure he will be desperate to get to a hundred.

"I won’t be giving my team selection away, but it wouldn’t surprise me if three of my number nines are involved over the 90 minutes."

The narrow victory over Alashkert in August - earned thanks to a second half Morelos effort - is Rangers' only win in six European outings so far this season.

And Gerrard is fully aware of the significance of the double-header against a Brondby side that have won just three of their 12 Superliga fixtures ahead of their trip to Ibrox.

"I don’t mind if you put it that way," Gerrard said when asked if if this was a must-win tie. "We want to try and win every game here at Rangers no matter where we are sitting in the table.

"But having lost the first two games I think it’s very important that we win this head to head over the next two games.

"We have to take a minimum of four points and ideally we take six. So we need a performance and a result that’s going to try and kickstart our Europa League campaign.

"I don’t think our two performances have been miles away. But it’s a results business and to get out of the group you need results.

"We are well aware of that and if that adds a little bit more pressure going into [the] game and if people on the outside want to make it a must win game then we are okay with that."
