Two people have been taken to hospital after a morning collision on the A82 in the Scottish Highlands.

The accident, involving one car, happened in Spean Bridge, Lochaber, near to the commando memorial monument.

The condition of the occupants of the car is not known.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were made aware of a crash involving a single car around 11.20am on Tuesday, 19 October.

“The two occupants were taken to the Belford Hospital in Fort William and the road fully reopened shortly after 12.30pm.”

A public consultation was launched last year aimed at improving the safety of the A82 “gateway to the Highlands” trunk road, which twists its way via Loch Lomond, Glencoe, Fort William and Loch Ness.

Road safety campaigners say the road has been under the radar because of a focus on the A9 in Perthshire, which is generally regarded as the country’s worst for safety. Statistics published last year revealed there was a crash resulting in a casualty every three days on the A82 during 2018.

Neil Greig, policy director for motoring charity IAM Roadsmart, suggested wider use of two plus one overtaking lanes and raising the speed limit for HGVs could help cut accidents.
