BUILDING delays caused by coronavirus restrictions mean Glasgow's newest primary school will be delayed by six months.

And the change of schedule means North Kelvinside Primary's first class will be temporarily located in another school.

Education bosses said the move will help cut disruption to the youngest children.

Councillor Chris Cunningham, City Convener for Education, Skills and Early Years, said: “Construction was paused on the new build at the beginning of lockdown and unfortunately this has had an knock-on effect on our timeline for opening.

“We are communicating with the families in the new school catchment area to let them know what they should do to enrol their children and what plans will be in place for as smooth a transition as possible to the new school in March 2022.”

The school, in Maryhill, should have opened in August 2021.

A P1 class will be formed that month but located in the St Charles’ Primary School building - thought not be part of St Charles’ school.

The North Kelvinside Primary 1 class will have its own head teacher based in St Charles’ in preparation for the move to the new school building in March 2022.

North Kelvinside pupils will be able to join in with some activities at St Charles' before moving to their new school in 2022.

Enrolment for the new school will start next month and some children will have older siblings at school that are now no longer their catchment school.

Cadder, Caldercuilt, Kelvindale, Parkview, Highpark, Dunard, Saracen, Oakgrove and Royston primaries were all involved in the catchment consultation.

The council is reminding parents that they can find the new school catchment information on the council website.

P6 and P7 children will remain in their current schools until the transition to secondary.

But families will be contacted in January 2022 to discuss arrangements for older children in the current P1 to P5 to move over to the new school.

When finished the new school building will include 12 classrooms, various break-out spaces, a multi-purpose games and assembly hall, a drama space, a nurture room and a meeting room as well as staff and support spaces.

There will be an 11-a-side all weather pitch and an external multi use games area (MUGA) that will both be available for community use out-with school hours.
