ALLOA'S glassworks will remain open during the coronavirus lockdown, as bosses argue it is an “essential business”.

The plant, run by O-I, argued its bottles are “a vital part of the food and drink supply chain” after the Advertiser reached out following concerns from the community.

Several people, including a worker at the site and family members of other workers, have all voiced concerns about the factory on Glasshouse Loan remaining open.

Current guidance from the UK and Scottish Government is clear: any businesses not deemed absolutely essential must close to prevent the spread of coronavirus and to save lives.

However, many have questioned whether glass bottles for alcoholic drinks met that criteria.

One worker at the site, who did not wish to be identified, said the glass bottles are primarily used for whisky, gin and wine.

They questioned whether the production of those bottles was worth the plant remaining open, and also said attempts to introduce social distancing measures at the factory were “impossible” as staff work “shoulder to shoulder”.

Another individual who reached out echoed those sentiments, and said: “I used to work there and it's pretty impossible to keep distance.”

Family members of current employees were also afraid of the fact their loved ones were still being required to go into work.

One woman said: “I have friends and relatives who work in both these places who are frightened for their nearest and dearest because they are remaining open.”

And another said the anxiety caused by her partner coming home from the site every day during the coronavirus pandemic was “making me ill”.

The Advertiser had reached out to O-I before hearing concerns its social distancing measures were not effective.

The company has been contacted about this, but has yet to respond.

However, in its original response, a company spokesperson said: “Like many essential businesses, O-I Alloa maintains production and those employees who cannot work from home are attending.

“The company has put a range of measures in place to protect its workforce including social distancing and personal hygiene requirements.

“These follow guidelines from the World Health Organisation and the UK government.

“O-I supports customers throughout the food and beverage industries, keeping the supermarket shelves stocked.

“Packaging is a vital part of the food and drink supply chain.

“Individual employees are very welcome to discuss their personal situation with the HR team at the plant.”
