THE Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry (SCAI) is looking to hear from anyone with relevant information about young offenders previously detained at HMP Glenochil.

The Wee County prison used to function as a young offenders institution until the modernisation of Polmont in 2010.

Earlier this month, it was identified as one of 10 institutions the inquiry is probing.

The others include Polmont YOI itself along with Barlinnie Young Offenders Institute, Wellington School in Midlothian, and St Philip's School in Airdrie.

The inquiry was established to investigate the abuse of children in care in Scotland, and will publish a report of its conclusions at the end of its inquiries.

Lady Smith, chair of the inquiry, said: "I would ask that anyone who has any relevant information about any of these institutions to please get in touch.

"We want to hear from you regardless of whether you've already made a report to the police or to anyone else. It does not matter whether or not you have been involved in any other investigation. You can still talk to us."

Lady Smith added: "I know that it can be difficult and very emotional to talk about experiences in care.

"However, we have a highly experienced witness support team and they will help and support you throughout the process.

"We'll do all we can to help you feel safe and secure when you speak to us."

Investigations into the provision of care from a range of institutions are ongoing, with evidence being taken from witnesses who can provide valuable information, as well as the gathering of a wide range of documentary evidence.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Prison Service, which runs Glenochil Prison, told the Advertiser: "The Scottish Prison Service is committed to assisting the Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry with its work and we will offer our support wherever necessary."
