Scottish Cup 4th Round, replay

ALBION boss Dave Mackay was left fuming following his side's defeat to Clyde in their Scottish Cup replay.

A brace of Blair Henderson penalties were not enough as a collection of defensive mishaps saw the Binos crash out of the cup, to the anger of their manager.

And the former St Johnstone defender was in no mood to make excuses after his side's 3-2 defeat.

Mackay told Stirling News Sport: "The performance was embarrassing. I'm embarrassed for myself and for some of the players.

"I know how good the players can be and we have been letting ourselves and the club down. It has been nowhere near good enough.

"We nearly got back into the game but that would have been papering over cracks. There was no way we deserved to take them to extra time.

"Clyde looked hungrier and sharper. The first half performance was reminiscent of some of the horror shows we have had in the past.

"The amount of goals we have conceded must be the worst in all the divisions and the standard of goals we are losing is shocking as well.

"We are causing our own problems time after time. There were numerous things we could have done better."

Mackay bemoaned his side's habit of making defensive errors and urged his more experienced stars to step up to the plate and start performing.

He added: "It is so quiet out there at times and it is tough to fathom why that is. We have a lot of experienced guys and it is time for them to step up to the plate.

"We have been making simple, basic errors and that really kills you on a weekly basis.

"It is very frustrating because you can do defending sessions all the time in training and everyone is organised and giving nothing away, but as soon as we go out on the pitch it's like we've never played together before."

The Binos return to league duty when they face Montrose on Saturday and Mackay says it is vital that his players respond in the right manner and start performing.

He said: "I've got belief in the guys but we are just not doing it right now. The Montrose and Berwick games are massive because we are in a real relegation fight just now.

"Anybody who thinks we will make the playoffs right now are deluded. Right now we have to get away from the foot of the table. We need a big reaction.

"We have to get a reaction on Saturday and we must be fired up. We will have to show a lot more fight, desire and ability if we are to get the kind of result we need."
