JIM GOODWIN insists he is still on the lookout for defensive additions to his squad after Alloa Athletic strolled to victory in their recent pre-season friendly over Berwick Rangers.

The newly-promoted Championship side proved too strong for their League Two opponents in Saturday's 3-1 win.

A hat trick from Alan Trouten, who impressed throughout, set the Wasps on their way before Berwick pulled one back towards the end, following a flurry of changes.

After the game Goodwin, 36, said his side were looking in good shape ahead of the new campaign.

He told Advertiser Sport: "Obviously pre-season is just a fitness exercise really, it was most important to get through it injury free.

"I thought some of the forward play today and against Montrose was fantastic. You could see that Greig Spence and Alan Trouten are beginning to get an understanding there.

"Going forward we look great, but defensively we need to get another couple of bodies in and we are working hard on that at the moment.

"If we can get the right couple of defenders, we will not be too far away."

Several trialists turned out against Berwick as they hoped to impress Goodwin enough to win a contract ahead of the club's Championship campaign.

He continued: "I would like to add one or two younger members to the squad, then some more experienced ones who know exactly what challenge lies ahead in the Championship.

"We'll make a decision on one or two of the trialists in the coming days, but I thought Liam Dick did really well at left back and was comfortable throughout the game.

"But, it's a difficult one to gauge where the defenders are at because they haven't really been tested this afternoon, but going forward I thought we were excellent.

"We are trying to cast our net as far as possible. I know what's available inside the Scottish market, but we are wanting to look beyond that to see what is on offer."

There were plenty of positives for Alloa to take from the game, as they repeatedly threatened in behind thanks to the clever running of Trouten and Spence.

Full backs Dick and Scott Taggart tormented Berwick's hapless full backs throughout, with new boy Jake Hastie's proving a constant threat with his direct movement.

And after the game Trouten insisted he was settling in nicely to the side and looking forward to the challenge ahead.

The 32-year-old said: "Berwick was a good test for us against a decent team and I thought we played some good football and were always on the front foot.

"I am really looking forward to linking up some more with Greig Spence, who's hold up play has been excellent.

"It has been a good start, but it is only pre-season and Falkirk will provide a sterner test for us."

Alloa host Paul Hartley's Falkirk tonight and will kick off their season this coming Tuesday, July 17, when they welcome Arbroath to Clacks in the Betfred Cup.
