GOAL HERO Ross Stewart was delighted to clinch two promotions in one season – but admitted going up with the Wasps felt special.

The Alloa striker picked up a Championship winners’ medal with parent club St Mirren before scoring in the playoff final as Alloa returned to the second tier.

And this summer, along with fellow Saints attacker Jordan Kirkpatrick, he is in the unique position of being able to celebrate two separate promotions.

And although he would love to fight for his place in Paisley, he refused to rule out a return to the Wee County next season.

Stewart told Advertiser Sport: “To get two promotions in the one season is very special, but this one feels a bit different because we played a part in the game which got the team promoted.

"It’s hard to explain what a great feeling it is, and it’s something I’ll remember for a long time. We were both at the promotion party but we’re equally delighted to get Alloa up to where they want to be as well.

“I’m just enjoying the moment just now. I’ve not really thought about next season yet. I’ll go back to St Mirren and fight hard for my place there. I’ll speak to the manager and take it from there.”

Stewart insisted that he always believed the Wasps would carve out another chance, even when the tie seemed to be slipping away, and he was thrilled that he was able to tuck it away in the third minute of stoppage time.

He said: “With five minutes or so to go you do think it’s maybe not going to be your day, but I always felt we’d get one last chance, and then we got a bit fortunate with the deflection. You take a goal any way it comes.

“I was just focused on getting a strike away. There were two or three bodies running in but thankfully I was running onto it. I was overcome with emotion because it was a great feeling.”

The young forward reckons Alloa were the better side over the course of the tie and got what they deserved, despite having to be patient.

Stewart added: “I’m over the moon. It was nothing more than we deserved over the course of the two games. We were the better team, particularly in the first leg.

“We knew that we would have to go for it, and that Dumbarton would have chances of their own. Thankfully they didn’t take any of them.

“We did feel with the goal coming so late that that would give us momentum going into extra time, and in the end we were able to see it out really well.”
