GRAEME Holmes admitted he was delighted after making his landmark 200th Alloa start against Stranraer last Saturday.

The midfielder has been with the Wasps for six years, experiencing numerous highs and lows, and he admitted that winning the game with a last-minute goal from long-time teammate Kevin Cawley was the perfect way to mark the occasion.

However, the skipper revealed there had been some confusion over whether his big day actually came when the Wasps thrashed Brechin a fortnight ago.

Holmes told Advertiser Sport: “Scott Taggart actually told me it was my 200th start against Brechin so I will need to see the stats to check that one out.

"I’ve been here six years now and all but one of them has been with Kev. The last-minute goal is the perfect way to win the game to be honest. Kev has done that so often throughout his time here.

"He will no doubt be joining me on 200 starts soon. But we are also delighted for young Adam Martin, who made a real impact when he came on and set up the goal.”

Holmes admitted that it took a while for the Wasps to get a foothold in the game last Saturday, but insisted that the three points were deserved in the end.

He said: “We weren’t quite getting to grips with them but the gaffer made a change at half time and that seemed to work. We were the better team in the second half, and although they still threatened, from our point of view we deserved to win.”

Holmes reflected on the season so far and revealed he was looking at the positives, admitting that he won’t care how they get promoted if the Wasps are a Championship side next season.

He added: “For us, the second quarter of the season was where we failed. We have been much better since then and have picked up a lot of points in the second half of the season.

"We have been sitting in third and fourth at various points so to be sitting so comfortably in second now is obviously nice.

“One of our goals at the start of the season was to win the league, but the main aim was to get promoted and if that has to happen through the playoffs then so be it.

"They are great games to play in.”
