JIM Goodwin was again left to bemoan his side’s failure to finish off their opponents after Alloa’s League One draw with Albion Rovers last Saturday.

Goodwin’s side are unbeaten in 10 but have drawn three of their last four matches, leaving their title hopes hanging by the thinnest of threads.

And the player-manager spoke of his frustration at his team’s failure to score an all-important second goal.

Goodwin told Advertiser Sport: “I sound like a broken record because I have said it for the last few weeks but we do not kill teams off.

"We dominated possession and had 17 or 18 shots to their five or six, but we didn’t finish them off. We lost what was a really poor goal from our point of view.

"We have defended so well in recent weeks but unfortunately we didn’t in one situation today. We were well in control of the game but we just didn’t get that second goal.

“We had a lot of chances but you have to give Albion Rovers credit because they are now on a good run themselves. They are fighting for their lives and are scrapping to drag themselves away from the relegation dogfight, and you can see that in the way they play.

"But I don’t think there’s any doubt that we were still the better team. We got a lot of crosses in but we didn’t have enough bodies in the box.”

The Wasps have now drawn 11 games this season, the most of all the teams in League One, and Goodwin believes his side have deserved all three points in many of those games.

He said: “Our problem this season has been too many draws. We have drawn 11 of our games which is among the most in the country, and that shows that we haven’t been finishing teams off.

"There were some excellent performances both individually and collectively but I am just so frustrated because we have had two draws at home where we should have had six points.

"We are unbeaten in 10 games and have lost one since Christmas Eve, but we are still disappointed because the boys deserve to be winning games.”

Alloa now face the prospect of having to beat Livingston on Saturday to keep the title race alive, and Goodwin praised the West Lothian side for their consistency throughout the season, but says his side will be motivated to make sure the Lions’ champagne remains on ice for the time being.

He added: “Livingston have been excellent and have been the best team in the league. They deserve all the credit they get.

"They are a team who go and just get the job done. We want to make them win it, and in fairness to them, they have done that by grinding out wins.

"We certainly don’t want to hand them the title and I think that will be the motivation for the boys on Saturday.”
