ALLOA manager Jim Goodwin says his side have turned a corner following their victory over League One promotion rivals Airdrieonians.

The win marked the Wasps’ second successive triumph and strengthened their grip on second place.

And their player-manager was thrilled to have secured another three valuable points.

Goodwin told Advertiser Sport: “It was a great performance.

"We started the game really well and got ourselves two goals in front early on. We probably could have been three or four up with the amount of chances we had.

"We dropped out of the game a little bit and Airdrie came into it towards the end of the first half, but overall I am absolutely delighted that we have been able to follow up the performance and result against Queen’s Park with another huge three points.

“Starting the game well makes such a massive difference. Getting that first goal gives the boys so much confidence. A few weeks ago we were gifting teams head starts but we have managed to turn that corner.

"We have been fantastic defensively for the past four or five weeks. Andy and Frank have been absolutely immense.”

Alloa’s two goals came courtesy of defender Andy Graham, and Goodwin hailed the centre-back and his team-mates for putting their hard work on the training ground into practice.

He said: “Andy has been outstanding for us. For his first, it would have been very easy for him to lash at it but he was composed enough to lift it over the keeper.

"The corner was something we have been working on and it was a great header from a fantastic delivery. These are the sort of things we work hard on and the things we can control. The boys’ management of the game towards the end was excellent.”

The Wasps still face an uphill task to catch leaders Livingston, but Goodwin is adamant that his side will continue fighting for the title.

He added: “Every game is massive just now which is a mark of how competitive this league is. It doesn’t matter if you are playing the team at the top or the team at the bottom; we respect everyone the same.

"We have got a decent cushion in second and we want to cement that, but our ultimate goal is still to win the title. We will not give up putting the pressure on Livingston.

"It’s theirs to lose and they are a very good team but we will go toe to toe with them and see where it takes us.”
