Alloa boss Jim Goodwin was delighted after making experienced defender Frank McKeown the first signing of his tenure.

The former Stranraer captain linked up with his new team-mates after leaving Stair Park, and his manager believes his new addition has what it takes to be a success in the Wee County.

Goodwin told Advertiser Sport: “We are delighted to get Frank in. As soon as we knew he was becoming available it was a deal we moved pretty quickly to complete.

"He is exactly the kind of guy we need. He fits into everything we are about. He has played nearly 150 games for Stranraer and has been a great servant to them.

"He knows this league and what it takes to do well in it, and he is a very professional guy. He works hard and knows a number of members of the squad already so it will be an easy transition for him. He won’t have any trouble settling in.

“You can’t have enough leaders and winners in your team and that is the kind of road I am trying to go down.

"For him to have captained Stranraer for so long tells me that he’s got a good attitude, sets a good example and is a good pro, so he is a great addition to the squad.

"He strengthens us in defence and gives us competition for places which is what we want.

"I’ve now got three really good centre-halves in Jason [Marr], Andy [Graham] and Frank. Jason and Andy have got the jerseys at the moment and it’s up to them to keep them.

"Frank is there to put a bit of pressure on them and if anything happens then he will be ready to step in.”

Goodwin added that although he would like to bring in another forward before the window shuts, he is happy with how his squad is shaping up.

He said: “It isn’t a huge concern if we don’t get bodies in. But we are constantly looking, and if the right one becomes available then we will make a move on it.

"If I can bring one more in it would be great but two might be pushing it.

"We have lost Isaac Layne so we will try to bring in another forward because Jamie Longworth, Greig Spence and Scott Hynd are the only strikers we have at the moment.

"It would be nice to bring someone in but I need to reiterate that it isn’t a major concern at the minute because we have good enough quality there.”

The Wasps face Peterhead tomorrow in their first home game of 2017, and Goodwin admitted that they are expecting another hard-fought encounter with Jim McInally’s side.

He added: “We have played Peterhead three times already and have picked up a couple of wins and a draw, and we will be hoping to maintain that standard.

"We are well aware of how difficult it will be, and Peterhead played very well the last time we played them.

"Jim has them well-organised and they have some very good individuals so it is going to be a very tough game.

"But we are at home and the expectation is on us to win and continue the good run we are on at the moment, so that is what we will aim to do.”
