A CLACKS bowling club basked in the sun as they held their annual open day to mark the beginning of the season.

Members turned out in their numbers at Alva South Bowling Club, while plenty of new faces also stopped by.

The open day began with a speech from club president Adrian Bussey, who welcomed everyone to the club and paid respects to lost members of the past.

A special mention was made of George Calder Senior, who sadly passed away at the end of last season.

As a mark of respect to the veteran bowler, his seat was present on the side throughout the day.

Adrian was delighted with the turnout for the open day and appealed to any aspiring Wee County bowlers to stop by and take up the sport.

He said: “It was great to see the potential new members walk along to join in, the ones who got stuck in participating and the ones hoping to come back and try the game on rink night.

“Come and make new friends, try a new hobby, play a new sport that is open and able to all.

“Whether it be competitive, we enter in all the district competitions, or just for fun, whether you are wanting a new form of gentle exercise, or whether you just want to socialise and meet more like minded people, the local bowling club has so much to offer.”

In the club tradition, the bowling season was officially marked by the president’s wife Sonya Bussey throwing the first jack before being presented with flowers.

This was followed up by the usual opening day match between the president and vice president.

For people interested in taking up bowls, rink nights are held every Wednesday at 6.30pm and the club encourages new members of all levels to come along and join in.

The club is aiming to hold more social functions throughout the year, following positive feedback from their Burns Night earlier in the year.
