Doune Castle...2

Cambria...1

Doune withstood a late fight back to record a deserved opening day League Cup win.

Chris Ogilvie was unlucky not to open the scoring after 5 minutes. Ogilvie received the ball on the left edge of the box. He cut inside and rifled a low curling shot that smacked off the far post to safety.

After 35 minutes, Graham McClymont and Paul Statter combined to move the ball forward to Sean Heaver.

Heaver turned inside, jinked past one defender. From 25 yards, Heaver instantly unleashed an unstoppable shot that flew into the top right hand corner of the net to give Doune a 1-0 lead.

Two minutes later, Heaver almost doubled the lead with another driving run and shot as he mesmerised the Cambria backline with his dribbling.

Doune made it 2-0 after 57 minutes.

Sean Heaver received the ball on the left and turned the full back inside the box. The defender felled the winger with a clumsy challenge for a clear penalty.

Heaver took the kick himself, driving the ball into the corner of the net beyond the keeper’s valiant dive.

With three minutes remaining, Doune came close to putting the result beyond doubt.

Sam McDougall slipped the ball to Dylan McGowan. His effort beat the keeper but cannoned off the face of the bar to safety.

As the game crept into the final minute, unexpectedly Doune conceded a careless goal that gave Cambria late hope, a close range finish making it 2-1.

Cambria then sensed an unlikely opportunity to salvage a point and almost immediately forced a corner on the Castle left. Steven Fotheringham averted the danger with an imperious take to ensure Doune started their League Cup campaign with a deserved win.
