A FRESH and utterly different perspective on the race to the South Pole from five 'Snow Widows' is to be provided at an event in Stirling.

Author and artist Katherine MacInnes is the latest speaker for the Royal Scottish Geographical Society’s Inspiring People talks programme and will talk about her book, Snow Widows.

Through newly-found archive material and photographs, Katherine reconstructs the lives of five women – wives, mothers and sisters – of the men participating in Robert Falcon Scott’s polar expedition.

In a gripping and remarkable feat of historical reconstruction, she vividly depicts the lives, loves and losses of the ‘snow widows’, describing the women’s attitudes to the expedition, their place in society, and the agony of distance, where it could take a year to receive news from the expedition.

The talk will take place at the University of Stirling's Logie Lecture Theatre at 7.30pm on Wednesday, February 14.

Tickets are free for Royal Scottish Geographical Society members, students and under 18s and are £10 for general admission. They can be booked in advance online at www.rsgs.org/events or bought in cash at the door.
